Biology is the study of living things and their vital processes, where at HKBU the academic staff teaching the programmes have a diverse range of expertise, supported by access to a wide range of state-of-the-art research facilities. Currently students can choose either Biotechnology or Environmental Science as their major within the programme.
Unique Features
Students who select this filed will study environmental and human health issues, the biological and chemical basis of environmental problems, as well as, the application of appropriate management technologies that remedy or restore degraded environments.
Student Learning Experiences
Students can join the Student Exchange Programme and study outside of Hong Kong for one semester or one academic year, with numerous exchange partners located throughout the world. Moreover, the local and oversea internships organized with different agencies such as World Wide Fund for Nature in Hong Kong (WWF-HK) and Ocean Park; and Summer excursion programme (e.g. Okinawa, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Sabah) are perfect platforms provided annually for student exploration on nature and getting relevant working experience.
Career Opportunities
Many of our graduates gain employment after graduation in a range of fields such as nature conservation, biotechnology marketing and management, biological sciences, education, environmental monitoring, pollution control, public health and sanitation and food and environmental hygiene.
The Department also offers opportunities for postgraduate study at MSc, MPhil and PhD level for graduates who have interest in further study.

We adopt a holistic approach in selecting applicants on individual merits. Applicants are required to meet the University entrance requirements, English Language requirements and Programme entrance requirements (if any).
Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma Students/ Holders
AD/ HD holders or students studying in the final year of AD /HD programmes may apply for Year 3 entry.
Transfer Students
Transfer students are current students of recognised local/ overseas institutions who are enrolled in a full-time or sandwich government-funded or self-financed degree programme.
Applicants who have completed at least one year of study of a 3-year degree programme or two years of study of a 4-year degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
Inter-institutional transfer of students is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Degree Holders
Holders of Bachelor’s/ Master’s/ Doctoral Degree or students studying in the final year of a degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
