Today, China is entering a new phase in its pursuit of modernisation, but this process can never be understood without going back to the roots. The aim of the History Concentration is to train students to gain a holistic and balanced view of China, thus preparing them for a variety of occupations which demand a full appreciation of the present complexities in light of past developments. The ultimate objective of training in history is to educate generalists who can think, analyse and write. This option is no exception, especially when it is becoming more and more obvious that Hong Kong society greatly needs this kind of humanist orientation.
Unique Features
Students will be expected to follow a curriculum which (1) trains them in historical methods and historiography; (2) prepares them for a comprehensive and integrated understanding of modern Chinese history; and (3) documents the significance of that past for China’s present-day development. With their basic writing and analytical skills, students will be encouraged to examine China from the perspective of a global/regional vantage point as well as from that of their local environment—Hong Kong.

Remarks
Students may have the option of taking an integrated programme by extending their undergraduate study by one year, leading to the award of a bachelor's degree in that Major plus a Diploma in Education.

We adopt a holistic approach in selecting applicants on individual merits. Applicants are required to meet the University entrance requirements, English Language requirements and Programme entrance requirements (if any).
Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma Students/ Holders
AD/ HD holders or students studying in the final year of AD /HD programmes may apply for Year 3 entry.
Transfer Students
Transfer students are current students of recognised local/ overseas institutions who are enrolled in a full-time or sandwich government-funded or self-financed degree programme.
Applicants who have completed at least one year of study of a 3-year degree programme or two years of study of a 4-year degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
Inter-institutional transfer of students is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Degree Holders
Holders of Bachelor’s/ Master’s/ Doctoral Degree or students studying in the final year of a degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
Applicants applying to the programme are expected to have a Chinese language qualification as deemed acceptable by the University.
For applicants holding international qualifications, they may fulfill the Chinese Language requirement with the following Chinese qualifications:
