China is now the second largest economy in the world. Impressive growth has been achieved since the launch of economic reform in 1979. Alongside the rapid economic growth ae social, environmental and technological issues that pose challenges to the sustainability of development in China. China’s integration to the world economy and changing role in the international arena have aroused much academic and business interests. Its importance to Hong Kong can never be over-emphasised.
The Economics Concentration of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in China Studies aims to meet a growing need for a programme oriented towards the Chinese economy. Apart from solid knowledge about Chinese economy, students will be equipped with economic theories and analytical tools useful for formulating business strategies and assessing government policies.
Unique Features
China Studies is a transdisciplinary programme which provides an opportunity for our students to understand China from a wide spectrum of disciplines. In particular, the Economics Concentration aims to equip students with the analytical skill with emphasis on applying economic knowledge in assessing China’s development.
Student Learning Experiences
Students are encouraged to acquire learning experience outside classroom to broaden their horizon through exchange study, internship and service learning. Other than opportunities provided at the University level, a Summer Sojourn at Tsinghua University in Beijing and two credit-bearing courses, ECON 3066 Business Economics Internship and ECON 3075 Service-Learning in Sustainable Development, are specifically offered to our students.
Career Opportunities
The unique mix of knowledge in China and Economics is highly treasured by employers in view of the emergence of China. Our graduate have a diversity of career choices and are highly welcome by sectors including banking, finance, trading, news media and government departments.
Remarks
Students may have the option of taking an integrated programme by extending their undergraduate study by one year, leading to the award of a bachelor's degree in that Major plus a Diploma in Education.

We adopt a holistic approach in selecting applicants on individual merits. Applicants are required to meet the University entrance requirements, English Language requirements and Programme entrance requirements (if any).
Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma Students/ Holders
AD/ HD holders or students studying in the final year of AD /HD programmes may apply for Year 3 entry.
Transfer Students
Transfer students are current students of recognised local/ overseas institutions who are enrolled in a full-time or sandwich government-funded or self-financed degree programme.
Applicants who have completed at least one year of study of a 3-year degree programme or two years of study of a 4-year degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
Inter-institutional transfer of students is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Degree Holders
Holders of Bachelor’s/ Master’s/ Doctoral Degree or students studying in the final year of a degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
