This programme is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in mathematical and statistical concepts with an aim towards developing logical thinking and analytical skills that are applicable to various career fields.

Special emphasis on applications in industrial and commercial areas is stressed, and students are well trained in the use of various computer software packages to solve real-life problems in management science, logistics, computer visualization, computational finance, engineering design, actuarial science, clinical research, industrial applications, social science research and others.

Concentration options in Actuarial Statistics, Financial Risk Management, Operations Research, Quantitative Data Analysis and Scientific Computing. Students can graduate without any Concentration or with one or two Concentration(s) according to their interest and career goal.

Unique Features

Concentration in Financial Risk Management is jointly offered by the Department of Mathematics under Faculty of Science and the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences under School of Business, HKBU. Concentration in Actuarial Statistics is jointly offered by the Department of Mathematics at HKBU and the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the Simon Fraser University (SFU), British Columbia, Canada.

 

Student Learning Experiences

The department would provide students with internship opportunities in the summer, and organize various recruitment talks. The objective is to enhance students’ competitiveness for future employment, and to build a channel through which they can reach their potential employers. Students will work in an organization or a company as interns and complete work assignment that are primarily related to their major study.

The internship is credit bearing, and hence students earn academic credits after satisfactorily completing internship at an approved company or organization. The Census & Statistics Department of the government, iMusicTech Ltd., Convoy Financial Services, and Maxim's have previously offered intern positions to our students.

 

Career Opportunities

Careers available to graduates include those in the fields of teaching, applications programming, banking, market research, statistical consultancy, commerce, finance, and government organizations.

 

Remarks

Students may have the option of taking an integrated programme by extending their undergraduate study by one year, leading to the award of a bachelor's degree in that Major plus a Diploma in Education.

Associate Degree/ Higher Diploma Students/ Holders

AD/ HD holders or students studying in the final year of AD /HD programmes may apply for Year 3 entry.

 

Transfer Students

Transfer students are current students of recognised local/ overseas institutions who are enrolled in a full-time or sandwich government-funded or self-financed degree programme.

Applicants who have completed at least one year of study of a 3-year degree programme or two years of study of a 4-year degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.

Inter-institutional transfer of students is considered on a case-by-case basis.

 

Degree Holders

Holders of Bachelor’s/ Master’s/ Doctoral Degree or students studying in the final year of a degree programme may apply for Year 3 entry.
